NLC working on 4 key projects in G-B

Socioeconomic development schemes are being funded by the government

RAWALPINDI: The National Logistics Cell (NLC) is working on four key projects in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) that are expected to bring positive changes in the socioeconomic conditions of the populace of the area.

The projects include upgrading the road from Gilgit to Naltar, a state-of-the-art cardiac hospital, establishment of a polytechnic institute and a sewage treatment plant in Gilgit.

The projects funded by the G-B government are being executed by NLC engineers on a no profit, no loss basis and will promote the tourism industry, provide quality medical services to the people and address water contamination and environmental issues in the area.

Though contract of the Naltar Road project has not yet been concluded, NLC has completed 100 per cent mobilisation even before issuance of mobilisation advance by the government of Gilgit-Baltistan.



The NLC had set up a camp and crushing plant at the site, which has started production. Survey of the project is presently under way. The NLC had pointed out some technical issues concerning the project and the work would immediately start as per directions of the G-B government.

Similarly, the contract of the 50-bed cardiac hospital in G-B has not yet been signed. It was referred to the Project Steering Committee, Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and G-B, for final decision.

The committee agreed with NLC’s point of view on November 16. After necessary departmental action, the formal agreement would be inked between the G-B government and the NLC regarding execution of the project.

Construction of sewage treatment plant in Gilgit is in full swing and expected to be completed by mid-2019, a year ahead of its schedule, though it will still await the laying of sewerage line by other contractors.

Construction of the polytechnic institute in Gilgit has already commenced and about 35 per cent work has been completed. The NLC in coordination with the G-B Education Department has started classes since January this year.

It may be mentioned here that the NLC had set up a special Project Monitoring Unit in Gilgit to execute construction projects on a fast track basis while ensuring the highest standard of work.
