Mental health awareness

A shameful topic to talk about in Pakistan

KARACHI: Mental health has continued to be a neglected area in our society. Pakistan faces both physical and mental health issues. People in Pakistan do not get proper healthcare facilities and most of them focus only on physical health rather than mental health. Mental health is perceived as a shameful topic to talk about.

People do not know that mental wellbeing is equally important as physical health. While mental illnesses in Pakistan are growing, many medical facilities in urban areas do not properly cater to the ailment. Even the ones that are present are not up to the standard. On the other hand, there are no facilities available to cater to mental illnesses in rural areas.

Depression and anxiety are the main disorders that are found in people in the country. Problems that affect mental health are relationship problems, lack of support of friends and family, social anxiety, unemployment, lack of self-esteem, bullying, among many others.
