The Pakistan polo team is set to feature in the World Cup qualifier round of the Zone D play-offs, due to be held in Malaysian from June 12 to June 25
As many as seven countries including defending champions South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Malaysia will be battling in the qualifiers with the top three going into the Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Cup finals in San Luis, Argentina from October 11 to October 25.
The teams have been divided into two pools for the qualifiers.
PooI A includes India, Australia, Malaysia, and New Zealand while Pool B comprises Pakistan, South Africa and Nigeria.
Two winners from each pool will play the semi-final of the qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur on June 22.
A combination of youth and experience
Pakistan, who last qualified for the world cup championship in 2003, will face Nigeria on June 15 before taking on South Africa three days later.
The selection committee, after an extensive training camp in Rawalpindi and Lahore, has selected a six-member squad — a combination of young talent and relatively experienced players as well.
“Considering a growing number of talented polo players in the country, the association has realised the need to encourage more and more young players with the sole objective of preparing a team for the future,” said Pakistan Polo Association Chairman Isfandiyar Ali Khan Pataudi.
