Govt rubbishes concerns over closure of 18 INGOs' operations

Official statement says INGO policy framework is fully aligned with nationally determined priorities and needs

The government on Thursday rejected the concerns on the closure of operations of 18 international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) in the country.

Last month, 18 INGOs were notified by the government to wrap up their operations over failing to comply with prescribed rules in the country.

"We remain committed to pursuing an open and transparent INGO policy, which is underpinned by national laws, rules and regulations," said an official statement today.

"Pakistan’s INGO policy framework is fully aligned with nationally determined development priorities and needs," the communique added. "We recognise and appreciate the assistance from the donor community and INGOs."

It noted that "the grounds for rejection are clearly laid out in the policy document provisions."



The statement further said, "representatives of all 18 INGOs were given the right to appeal and the opportunity to provide additional details and discuss mutual concerns."

"Out of 141 that applied for registration since October 2015, applications of 74 INGOs have been approved," it said and added. "This figure shows over 50 % approval rate. These numbers do not count the applications of other INGOs which are being processed."

Concluding, the government said the approved INGOs are from all regions of the world. "They are operating freely in Pakistan and contributing to realisation of national development priorities."
