Rising death rate in Thar

Letter November 14, 2018
Tharparkar faces the most number of deaths of children owing to malnutrition

TURBAT: Thar is probably Pakistan’s one of the most ignored regions in the country. It is one of the 29 districts of Sindh and continues to be ignored even by the provincial government.

As the government has been continuously ignoring its many ordeals, the death rate in the district has only risen in the past four years. According to a report of the provincial health secretary, from 2015 to 2017, 1,327 children have lost their lives. These deaths occurred because of malnutrition or low birth weight. While malnutrition in children is a growing concern in the country as a whole, Tharparkar faces the most number of deaths of children owing to this menace.

It is not like these deaths are uncontrollable as with the governments’ attention — of both provincial and federal — these children can be saved. The people of Thar should be provided with basic necessities, not as witnessed before with spoilt wheat.

I urge the authorities concerned and the prime minister of Pakistan take meaningful steps for the safety of Thar’s children. For our children.
