Centre’s response sought over unpaid PSM employees

NADRA employees seek court direction against their suspension orders

KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, taking notice of the non-payment of salaries to employees of the Pakistan Steel Mills, sought replies from the federal government and the federal minister for production. The employees also staged a protest outside the SC's Karachi registry on Friday.

The Supreme Court took up a plea filed by suspended employees of the National Database and Registration Authority and ordered it to submit its response within a week.

The plaintiffs told the court that many NADRA employees had been suspended across the country, including 70 employees from the Karachi region. On the previous day, one of the suspended employees had died from a heart attack, the court was informed.

The plaintiffs told the court that the suspensions were baseless and were being done on the orders of the NADRA chief.

The CJP directed the NADRA chairperson to submit a report regarding the suspensions within a week.

Teachers' salaries

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered the Sindh chief secretary and education secretary to verify the employees in a matter pertaining to the non-payment of salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff in Karachi and Sukkur divisions.

The petitioner's lawyer argued that the issue pertained to 2012, but the salaries have still not been paid. The CJP remarked that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain whether the employees were bogus or not.

Doctors' contracts

The same bench sought a report from the health secretary and Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar on a plea regarding the contracts of doctors employed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.

Plaintiffs Dr Humera and others told the court that they had been working for the KMC since 2012, but had not been given permanent status. They added that the Sindh government and KMC were shifting the responsibility on one another.

The court issued notices to the health secretary and Karachi mayor and sought a report on the matter.
