Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar said that the state of public hospitals in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is far worse than the tall claims made by the government, Express News reported.

The top judge remarked on Wednesday during a hearing of a case regarding the disposal of medical waste in public hospitals in the province.

Any government that is unable to provide health and education facilities to citizens has failed its people.

"Medical waste is the cause of several diseases with 17,000 tonnes of it thrown at garbage dumps everyday, but there is no government system in place for to get rid of it," the CJP added.

K-P secretary health appeared before the court and said that on a daily basis 21kg of medical waste needs to be disposed off.

He added that facilities are available to rid of this waste in the province.

The government official went on to say that if the court gives two months time the needed machinery will also be installed.

To this, the top judge reacted by saying: "Setting up such heavy machinery can't be done in a day its not like installing a baking oven."

The court has given directives to the K-P health minister to appear before the court to provide clarification into the matter on October 30.
