Bolan Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Farrukh Atique said, “A van carrying smuggled oil collided with a Mazda truck at 3am on Tuesday leaving seven people dead and four, including two policemen, injured.
“Three vans (including the one carrying smuggled oil), a car and a truck (with which the van collided) were completely torched in the accident.”
District administration officials flanked by Levies personnel and a fire brigade rushed to the spot and doused the fire. “It was an uphill task as it took nearly two hours to control the fire which had consumed five vehicles,” district administration officials said.
The bodies and the injured were shifted to a nearby district headquarter hospital for medico-legal procedure and treatment.
“The fire spread because the van that collided with the truck was carrying smuggled oil,” said Atique. “The accident happened as the van’s brakes failed.”
It caused suspension of traffic on the Quetta-Sibi Highway. As soon as the rescue operation was complete at 5am, traffic resumed.
Later, the injured had been shifted to Quetta for burns treatment while the Levies force lodged a First Information Report of the incident.
Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan expressed grief and sorrow over the accident. He directed authorities to ensure better health care facilities are provided to all injured.
Kamal offered his condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to utilise measures to make travelling safe on national highways.
The names of the deceased and the injured could not be ascertained till the filing of this news story.
