Rising cases of suicides

Letter October 23, 2018
Changing our academic curricula is a long-term solution

TURBAT: The increase in the number of suicide cases around the world has become a wake-up call for entire humanity.  One reason for a person taking his or her life is depression. The other important reason is hard economic circumstances.

In Pakistan a number of students have committed suicide because of the burden of obtaining a degree. Our educational institutions pressure students to such an extent that they are left with no choice but to end their lives. We can help them cope with depression by making education less strenuous and by inculcating in them good time management techniques.

Changing our academic curricula is a long-term solution but in the short term we can help students by teaching them how to manage time and complete different tasks assigned to them for different courses.

The government should also help students. It should set up committees that conduct mental health awareness drives, inform people about mental health and mechanisms of coping with depression.
