High-tension wires

The bunch of wires over buildings and streets pose great risk to the people

KARACHI: As if K-Electric was not a problem for many of its customers, with recurrent power outages in many areas of the city, snapping of its high-tension wires is causing grievous injuries to people. Another boy’s life has been endangered because of KE’s faulty wires.

A 13-year-old boy was electrocuted after a high-tension wire fell on him in Bin Qasim Town. The boy is struggling for his life in a private hospital. This is the fourth case of electrocution by a high-tension wire in less than two months. And once again all that the electricity supply company has done is issue a statement mentioning that they are ‘deeply saddened’ and extending complete medical support on humanitarian grounds. Almost as if they think they would hush the matter by providing financial support.

It is unfortunate that little boys are being grievously injured because a company has not paid much heed to its high-tension wiring system. Anyone who enters the city can clearly see its skylines covered with wires tangled among wires. I can’t think of another metropolitan city as big as Karachi to have such a haphazard wiring system.

The bunch of wires over buildings and streets not only ruins the beauty of the city but also poses grave risks to people as has been proven by the cases of electrocution that has come forth in the past two months. K-E needs to do much more than just express sorrow and provide financial support for treatment of victims. It should rewire its system to prevent snapping of wires.
