Resolution of Kashmir dispute not in sight

Letter October 17, 2018
Violence has spread all over India-occupied Kashmir

KECH, TURBAT: Violence has spread all over India-occupied Kashmir. When Kashmir will see peace not one can say. The revolt against the Indian occupation that began with renewed vigour years ago is continuing.

According to a recent report, 451 people — 125 security forces personnel, 217 militants and 108 civilians, including a pro-government person, were killed in the valley from 2016 to 2017 alone. Some believe that these numbers are under-reported. One can then only imagine the plight of the many Kashmiris living in India-occupied Kashmir, many have been widowed, many orphaned.

The Kashmir dispute can easily be resolved through dialogue only if Islamabad and New Delhi decide on coming to the negotiating table. And the foreign minister of Pakistan wanted just that when he sent a proposal to his counterpart in New Delhi to hold a meeting at the UNGA. But this opportunity was also lost as the foreign minister of India rejected it.

The people of Kashmir are awaiting peace. Generations have been lost and generations are being raised in the war-torn region, but no one seems perturbed enough to seek a resolution of the issue.
