ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday established a control room for overseas Pakistani voters for the by-elections to be held in 35 constituencies on Sunday (today).

According to an ECP official, all those overseas Pakistanis who did not receive their voting passport may contact the control room on 0092512778899.

He said that voter passport is necessary for overseas Pakistanis to cast their votes in by-elections, adding that the control room would remain functional from 9am to 9pm.

By-polls: Opposition alliance may dent PTI’s position

“As many as 7,364 eligible I-voters have received their voters' passes. The commission has issued voters’ passes to these successful registered overseas Pakistanis during the registration process of I-voters through their email ID.

“Only registered I-voters with voters’ passes will have the right of casting vote,” he added.

He asked all such pass holders to exercise their right of vote during 8am to 5pm (Pakistan Standard Time) on the polling day and advised them to cast their vote as early as possible.

The registered I-voters would be responsible for protecting the information of their voter pass, he said, adding that I-voters should avoid sharing any information about their log in and voter pass with anyone for safety purpose.

He said, “The ECP started registration of overseas Pakistani voters from September 1 for giving them the right to vote in the by-polls. The commission also extended the date for registration of overseas Pakistanis from September 15 to September 17.”

The official said all registered overseas Pakistanis voters would have the right to cast their votes in the by-election through the I-voting system.

35 seats up for grabs in crucial by-polls today

“A letter had been written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary to direct the Pakistani missions abroad to educate overseas Pakistanis regarding registration process and right to vote in the by-elections in their respective constituencies,” he said, adding that the ECP's passes for I-voters would be valid for a stipulated time.

The official added the commission would generate I-voting pass system for registered overseas Pakistanis on October 14 (today) and all eligible voters could cast their vote.

“The ECP has registered only those overseas Pakistanis who have machine readable passports, National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis and their valid email address,” he said, adding that through ECP's special software, the overseas Pakistanis would be able to cast their vote by using their email.

He said, “A specific website has been developed jointly by the ECP and NADRA for awareness and other aspects to encourage overseas Pakistanis to register for I-voting with instructions in English and Urdu. I-voting is a pilot project and after use of this system, the commission will compile and submit a report to parliament for further legislation.” app
