SHABQADAR: Hail, which clobbered the Mohmand Tribal District on Friday, has been welcomed by locals who hope that it would help end the prevailing drought in the area.

On Friday morning, the Mohmand tribal district’s headquarters Ghallanai and its adjoining areas saw heavy hailstorm followed by heavy rains. The hail covered the surrounding hills appearing as if they had just received a blanket of heavy snowfall after years.

The weather event continued for around an hour and a half, raising the water level in locally dug canals — known as Khawars — by several metres.

The hail damaged some crops, especially vegetables being grown in Pandyali and some parts of Ghallanai.

However, it also brought joy to many faces in the district after a long spell of drought.

This summer had seen water scarcity in Ghallanai and Baizai sub-divisions of the district, Sajid, a resident of Ghallanai, told The Express Tribune.
