The Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) has announced to go on strike for an indefinite period if the Sindh government fails to increase fares for intra-city transport.
The development comes in the wake of the increase in prices of compressed natural gas (CNG). Dealers increased CNG price in the range of Rs16.30 to Rs22.33 per kilogramme and it now stands between Rs98 and Rs104 per kg instead of Rs81.70 per kg in Sindh on Thursday.
The government has revised upward the gas supply price for CNG fuel stations by 40% to Rs980 per million British thermal units (mmbtu) from Rs700 earlier, according to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority's notification.
Lahore Transport Company imposes fine on 621 vehicles
KTI General Secretary Muhammad Ilyas told The Express Tribune that they will meet the provincial government on Monday to come up with new fares.
The KTI plans to charge Rs15 for the initial five kilometres and Rs20 for five to 10km. Beyond 10km, they want to charge Rs30.
