An 18-year-old Muslim girl was tied to a tree and brutally beaten up for eloping with a Hindu man from the Indian state of Bihar on Saturday.

According to NDTV, She was publicly thrashed by the village Panchayat members after her family found her.

A video of the incident in which the 18-year-old is half conscious shows scores of villagers gathered around to witness the incident. Another snippet shows a man pulling her by the hair while lying on the ground, still tied to the tree. A third man in the clip fetches her a glass of water.

When asked how long she had known the man she eloped with, the teenager hesitantly responded that she knew him for one-and-a-half years.

The teenager's father maintained that he wanted to marry his daughter off to someone from his own community. Her father also informed that his daughter eloped in the middle of the night during a power outage. "We searched the entire street, after which we woke up her brothers. We had no clue about where she had gone," he said.

On the occasion, the father also alleged that after running away, the Hindu man called him and informed him of his daughter's whereabouts. Following which the father and villagers brought the teenager home.
