Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon took oath as new governor of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) on Sunday, Radio Pakistan reported.

Chief Judge of the Supreme Appellate Court G-B Justice Javed Iqbal administered the oath.

Maqpoon, who is the G-B chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has become the sixth governor of the northern administrative territory.

G-B Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rahman, cabinet ministers and senior civil and military officials attended the ceremony.

The post was vacated after Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan resigned as G-B governor earlier in September, following a controversy triggered by an alleged leaked video.

“He [Mir Ghazanfar] didn’t think it was appropriate for him to cling on to the post as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had formed government at the centre and it was their prerogative to appoint a fresh governor in the state,” remarked a family member on the resignation.
