Making bureaucracy efficient

Letter September 28, 2018
Government will increase salaries of civil servants to eliminate corruption

SHIKARPUR: A glimpse of positive change in bureaucracy is seen under the Naya Pakistan regime. Recently, PM Imran Khan arranged a meeting with bureaucrats. Indeed, bureaucracy is the backbone of a country’s institutions and the PM spoke to them about constructive reforms under a weak bureaucracy.

Further, he claimed that there would be no political pressure or National Accountability Bureau embarrassment. Such steps are admirable because most bureaucrats come under political pressures and hence are unable to perform their duty freely.

Citing the instance of Singapore, PM Imran Khan said that the government would increase salaries of civil servants so that corruption is eliminated. In Singapore, bureaucrats are paid handsomely and there is a serious accountability process.

Undoubtedly, Mr Khan appears to be the first PM of Pakistan in recent times who is focusing on making the bureaucracy work efficiently. If such steps are taken in all sincerity, we expect to see a positive change in bureaucracy soon. All stakeholders of the new government must cooperate in implementation of such policies of the PM, as these are the need of the hour.
