CII to draft new Talaqnama making triple divorce punishable offence
Council also decides to add due procedure for a divorcee to pursue matter in new document
ISLAMABAD:
The Council of Islamic Ideology on Wednesday decided to draft a comprehensive ‘Talaqnama’ containing the punishment for a man who gives triple talaq (divorce) in one go and due procedure for a divorcee to pursue the matter.
CII Chairman Dr Qibla Ayaz told the media that a draft of the new Talaqnama will be formulated by the council members made up of religious scholars.
He expressed his grave concern over the rising number of divorce cases in the country.
Ayaz added that it has become a major social issue as almost every day these cases are reported in local mosques nationwide.
“The existing talaqnama is outdated, therefore it is the need of the hour to formulate a new talaqnama that addresses all current issues related to it along with punishment for the person who will give three talaqs [in one go],” he said.
While talking to The Express Tribune, Ayaz said that the matter was taken up in a CII meeting today. He said that some members were of the opinion that the issues of talaq should be taken in a holistic manner, as well as, other issues related to different forms of talaq should also become a part of the document.
Earlier, the CII’s legal wing had proposed amending existing family law to penalise husbands who end conjugal relationships by giving ‘triple talaq’ in one sitting.
