Lack of career counselling

Many educational institutions in Pakistan lack professional career counsellors on campus

TURBAT: Many educational institutions in Pakistan lack professional career counsellors on campus. They are of the thinking that career counselling would only add to the expense of running the institution.

However, career counselling is crucially important for students as they need guidance in selecting subjects before they enter college, so that they can make an informed decision on what career path to choose.

While some higher educational institutions in Sindh and Punjab do have career counsellors, this is completely absent in Balochistan. Students in Balochistan face a lot of problems because of the absence of career counsellors.

Once I had asked a friend of mine, “what he wanted to be in the future?” And he had said, “a doctor”, while both of us had applied for admission to an engineering school. His lack of awareness had badly shocked me. This is not a lone case and many students lack basic information about such things.

The Balochistan government needs to make career counselling at school and undergrad levels mandatory for the welfare of students and the future of the province.
