The 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will commence on Tuesday in New York.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is leading the country's delegation and will address the session on Saturday.

The session will be addressed by 36 heads of state on the first day, including presidents of the United States, Brazil, Ecuador, Turkey, France and Nigeria, the king of Jordan, the supreme leader of Iran and the prime minister of United Kingdom.

This year's theme revolves around making UN relevant to global leadership and sharing responsibilities for a peaceful, equitable and sustainable society. The UNGA is one of the six main organs of the UN and the only one where all member states are given equal representation: one nation, one vote.

In the runup to the session, hawkish statements from India saw a marked increase. Pakistan's western neighbour cancelled talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries which were to be held on the sidelines of the session.
