Meesha Shafi throws major shade at Sadaf Kanwal for her remarks on #MeToo

'Strong eyebrows... do not make a strong backbone'

Entertainment Desk September 20, 2018

With the gradual uprising of #MeToo in Pakistan, many have come forward with their own ordeals of sexual harassment.

Sadaf Kanwal's recent remarks on the matter have sparked social media outrage. Many called out the supermodel for her insensitivity on the subject and how problematic her stance really is.

"You know aap ke sath #MeToo jab ho, tab bol do. Baad mein aap ko yaad araha hai #MeToo, So I think jab ho bol do. (You know, when you have a #MeToo incident, say it then. Why are you remembering it later? I think when it happens you should say it.)" Sadaf was speaking about the campaign in a local talk show.

She further added, "Agar mere saath #MeToo kabhi hua tou mai bolungi na. aur mai social media pe nahi bolungi mai aap sab ko bataungi (If I ever have a #MeToo incident, I would say it. And I won't just say it on social media. I'd tell all of you.)"

Meesha Shafi, too, had a thing or two to say about it. Taking to Twitter, the Coke Studio singer threw some major shade at the 25-year-old and wrote, "Strong eyebrows.. do not make a strong backbone. Pfffft."

A user then went on to comment how difficult it must have been for Meesha to talk about own episode of alleged harassment.

"After this whole Sadaf Kanwal incident, I realise how difficult it must have been for Meesha Shafi to take a stand for herself and point a harasser in the same media community which harvests people like Sadaf," wrote Javeria.

Other than the Aya Lariye singer, Twitterati slammed Sadaf's comments as well.

"I’m disappointed how Sadaf Kanwal made light of #MeToo movement, how I was her fan, how her privilege blinds her to ordeals of sexual abuse victims who find courage to fight the evil, how all this education and exposure doesn’t bring empathy, how this is how she uses her impact," tweeted Maryam.

Another user, Kiran, wrote, "Sadaf Kanwal says there's no point of speaking against harassment once it has in the past. Well Sadaf, as you said that you're lucky enough to have never faced harassment, I don't think you can understand what it feels like in that very moment. It's easier said than done."

"Sadaf Kanwal is a prime example as to how mediocrity and toxicity receive appreciation in Pakistani Fashion industry," wrote, Ayesha Kamal penned. "The woman doesn't even know a damn thing regarding significance of #MeToo and spews crap as to how meray sath #MeToo kabhe nahi huwa. How Disgusting it is!"

"Bored out of my mind, I ended up watching Sadaf Kanwal’s full interview and my God, this girl speaks absolute trash. How has she survived in this industry for this long? I'm so disappointed," tweeted another user.

While many criticised Sadaf, PR mogul Fahad Hussain came out to support the model.  Taking to Instagram, Fahad posted several pictures of Sadaf and wrote - which seemed like major shade on Meesha, "Strong eyebrows, even stronger backbone!"

"Sadaf Kanwal, you are a fighter and a real person. Do not let these negative comments bring you down, they never did in the past, nor shall they do so in the future. More power to you girl," he said.

Sadaf, on the other hand, has kept mum about the controversy as of now.
