7,419 overseas Pakistanis registered as voters

By-elections will be held in 37 constituencies of national and provincial assemblies

ISLAMABAD : Only 7,419 overseas Pakistanis got themselves registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to vote in the by-elections being held in 37 constituencies of national and provincial assemblies on October 14, according to an ECP statement issued Monday.

The ECP had launched i-voting pilot project on September 1 to allow overseas Pakistanis vote in the by-polls.

Under the ECP’s prescribed criteria, each overseas Pakistani having National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), Machine Readable Passport (MRP) and whose name was in the voters list for the by-polls in any of 37 constituencies, was eligible for registration as voters.

As many as 631,909 people met the criteria and were eligible to be registered as voters for the by-polls.

Out of which 7,419 participated in the voters’ registration process to cast vote in by-polls through internet.

The ECP said it would issue passes to the registered voters from October 10 to October 14, which would allow them to vote in by-elections.

ECP has announced by-election schedule for 11 National Assembly, 13 Punjab Assembly, Nine Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and two seats each from Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies.
