The now father-of-two who made his Bollywood debut with Ishq Vishk said that it was difficult for him to get out of the "chocolate boy" image.

"I have always tried to get good and versatile roles. I wanted to show my versatility. But nobody would offer me such scripts. They used to think that I am only suitable for chocolate boy and college student roles. There were no other options," Shahid told The Indian Express.

He explained that it was through hard work and perseverance that convinced film-makers that he had more to offer.

The Mausam star added, "It’s been 15 years since I have been working in the industry. After much hard work, I am now being offered diverse roles. It’s been a long journey and I have made a lot of effort. Today, I feel very fortunate that people also think of me as an actor who plays a variety of characters."

Shahid's upcoming film Batti Gul Meter Chalu shows him in yet another avatar. He shared that his character from the film was unlike any other he has done so far.

"It is diametrically opposite to what I played in Padmaavat. Sushil Kumar Pant, my character in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, has verbal diarrhea. He is completely immoral and has no values," continued the 37-year-old actor.

The film is set in India's Uttarkand district that speaks of electricity theft in rural parts of the country. Shahid continued, “There are many such issues that people face in those areas and we have addressed them in the film."
