Need to promote music

The young generation of the country should be taught music

RAWALPINDI: The young generation of the country should be taught music. Now most young people try to learn Western music and become pop singers. This is okay but we should also realise that taking up a guitar and becoming a musician and a pop singer is not all about music. Where is melody now? Even the genre of qawwali is dying out. This is a sad state of affairs.

We should also pay attention to learn to play sitar, violin, tabla, harmonium and such other musical instruments. We should pay attention to learn vocal music, both light classical and classical. There is a dearth of such musicians and singers in Pakistan. Of course, the latter kind of music takes time to learn, but it should not be sacrificed at the altar of pop music. There are few institutes where this type of music is taught. The number of such institutes should be increased. If we take a glance at the music scene of the subcontinent we find that most classical musicians and singers are Muslim. They are from Amir Khusro to Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and many others are carrying on the great tradition of music. What a sorry state of affairs it is that in many cities and towns of the country it is difficult to get a sitar repaired. This situation needs to be rectified.
