LAHORE: The opposition expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz and paid tribute to her struggle for democracy in the Punjab Assembly.

Kulsoom passed away at a hospital in Britain's capital on September 11 after a protracted battle with cancer. Her funeral will be held on Friday.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Hina Pervez Butt submitted the resolution, highlighting Kulsoom’s role in politics. The resolution also sought renaming of departments in Islamia College, FC college and Punjab University after the wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

“Pakistan has been deprived of a great pro-democratic woman. Begum Kulsoom led PML-N during her husband’s exile. She continued efforts for democracy despite being under house-arrest.”

Hina also reflected on the Sharif family’s decision to leave Kulsoom in London during her cancer treatment and travel to Pakistan. “She could not visit the constituency due to health issues yet won the by-polls. This shows the love showered upon her and the respect she held."

The PML-N MPA lashed out at critics who used Kulsoom’s illness for political point-scoring.
