ISLAMABAD: The Wafaqi Mohtasib on Tuesday evaluated the recommendations of the committee formed by the Supreme Court for improving the condition of prisoners in jails.

Under the chairmanship of Syed Tahir Shahbaz the federal body reviewed the actions so far taken by the provincial governments.

The discussion was specially focused on oversight mechanism to monitor implementation of the directives by the top court.

Earlier the SC had recommended the formation of two committees in each province. Firstly, a Welfare Committee for the improvement of life of prisoners in jails especially for children, women and destitute resource-less prisoners and a District Oversight Committee was suggested to monitor the implementation of orders of the Supreme Court.

It further said that these committees would consist of members from civil society, bars, education and health sectors, etc.

The chairman urged provincial governments to finish the task of formation of the committees within the next few days.

The committee’s recommendations also discussed the expansion of probation/parole facilities in jails, computerisation/automation system to connect jails, courts and National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), introduction of biometric system, educational and skill training facilities, payment of fines to deserving prisoners and legal aid, etc.

The meeting was attended by representatives of ministry of interior, law and justice commission, provincial home departments, prosecution departments, the prison departments, the provincial mohtasibs, NADRA, higher education commission and the Allama Iqbal Open University.
