Sharif can be heard making a desperate final attempt to engage with his ventilator-ridden wife on July 12 by repeatedly saying ‘Baoji’.
“Open your eyes Kulsoom, Baoji … Kulsoom, Baoji. May the almighty give you health and strength.”
Deposed prime minister Nawaz and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were sent to Adiala jail late on July 13 following their arrest at the airport upon their return to the country.
Maryam also recalled the same incident in an interview onboard the flight back home to face the jail term given to her, Sharif and husband Captain Safdar.
Speaking to senior journalist Asma Shirazi, she said they were informed by her brother Hassan Nawaz to reach hospital instead of home when they landed at Heathrow Airport to attend her ailing mother earlier this year.
“He informed us that mother has been taken to hospital after suffering two back to back cardiac arrests and that she was now on ventilator and doctors have given up on her. The whole month following that she couldn’t open her eyes, she did not respond. She was on respirator, my father and I tried calling her the whole day every day in hope that she just for once looked at us before we leave for Pakistan and the verdict was also issued in the meantime,” she said.

“Just yesterday when we were ready to leave for Pakistan, as you are also an eye witness, she all of a sudden opened her eyes for the first time and looked at us. I don’t know what God wanted from this … only the almighty knows reason behind it.
“She opened her eyes just for few seconds and there were two teardrops in her eyes … I said look Ami (mother) it’s me your Guriya (doll). The same doll you used to tease for crying all the time. Then I told her that your Guriya has become very brave now and has quite shedding tears and you should not weep too. I have no idea if she listened to what I had to say or not.”
Maryam had also tweeted the brief engagement with her mother before being sent to Adiala.
“First time in 30 days, Ami opened eyes for a few seconds. Don’t know if she saw or registered us. [Begum Nawaz] is still not conscious and on ventilator. Prayers solicited.”
