ISLAMABAD: The ulemas belonging to different schools of thoughts on Friday unanimously agreed to a seven-point code of conduct issued by the Ministry for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony for Muharram to maintain sectarian and religious harmony.

The code of conduct was agreed upon at a meeting presided over by the Minister for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony Noorul Haq Qadari and attended by ulema from different schools of thoughts.

According to official hand out issued by the ministry, the meeting was not only to review the security situation but also to ensure the law and order in Muharram.

The code of conduct suggests that all schools of thoughts would make sincere efforts to create an environment of love, tolerance and respect elders belonging to all groups.

Religious scholars and Ulema would avoid making provocative speeches using the public platforms that may hurt the sentiments of others. Efforts would be made to resolve sectarian differences through dialogue and reconciliation.

According to the code of conduct, no one would pass any remarks criticising any Muslim personality being revered by different schools of thoughts. Ulema and scholars would maintain unity on all issues keeping in view the current situation of the country.

The federal government also requested the provincial authorities to organise similar conferences at the provincial and district levels in order to ensure law and situation during the holy month of Muharram.

The federal minister for religious affairs said that there is a need to discourage religious extremism and intolerance in the country and to promote interfaith harmony. He was of the view that by respecting others religion and sentiments could help to promote religious harmony in the country which is currently need of the hour.
