QUETTA: The Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) on Friday announced that it will unconditionally support joint opposition candidate Maulana Fazlur Rehman in the presidential election in order to strengthen democracy in the country.

Addressing a joint news conference on Friday in Quetta, PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, “We have been hoping that Pakistan Peoples Party will withdraw its presidential candidate Aitzaz Ahsan for the sake of democracy.”

Former Senate deputy chairman Maulana Ghafoor Haideri, MNA Maulvi Kamaluddin, Hamid Khan Achakzai, Abdul Rahim Ziaratwal and other leaders of both the parties were present in the news conference.

The JUI-F chief said, “There are two opposition candidates. As the opposition has reposed confidence in me, the PPP should withdraw its candidate.”

Lamenting the attitude of the PPP leadership, Rehman said, “Our joint candidate for the prime minister’s post Shehbaz Sharif could have become the premier had the PPP supported us. Our victory is visible if PPP supports the joint opposition’s presidential candidate instead of fielding its own candidate.”

On the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf slogan of change in Pakistan, Achakzai said, “The nation is going to witness a real change when Fazl is made the president of Pakistan along with Imran Khan as the prime minister.”

On supremacy of Constitution in the country, the PkMAP chief said, “To make Pakistan an Asian Tiger, we have to make sure of the supremacy of democracy and the Constitution. We have simple demands. When all institutions, including the judiciary and the army, will work within their jurisdictions, the country will be safe and sound.”

To a question regarding Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) being called “Mullah-Military Alliance”, Achakzai said, “Today the MMA has turned into Maulana-Mehmood Alliance as we have announced that we will support Maulana in the presidential poll.”
