LAHORE: Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to distance himself from the Khawar Maneka fiasco after learning through a report that there was no pressure on Punjab IGP to remove DPO Rizwan Gondal.

In its report, Punjab government has stated that the police officer used social media to turn out to be a "hero". It also said that Punjab chief minister Usman Bazdar didn't remove Gondal and that he was removed on falsely narrating the series of events.

Depoliticisation of police

On August 23, a police team led by Gondal briefly intercepted Khawar’s car after he didn’t stop despite being signaled by the police to do so. Khawar was also believed to have misbehaved with the officials.

Imran termed the dispute an internal matter of police, while the Punjab government will now oversee this matter.

On the other hand, Punjab Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan had said neither the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nor the Punjab government has anything to do with removing the DPO. He claimed that the officer was transferred on the complaints of citizens.
