Need to ban corporal punishment

Letter August 29, 2018
A man chopped off the foot of his son aged 12 in his home in Kasur, Punjab

KARACHI: There are many incidents and accidents ignored by us as a nation but some leave a permanent bearing in our minds. Recently, a man chopped off the foot of his son aged 12 in his home in Kasur, Punjab. A trivial matter of siblings fighting over a petty issue led the enraged and furious father to draw an axe lying in the home and strike it at the leg of his son. This was completely inhumane, barbaric and hostile attitude on the part of the father. The boy is still in critical condition at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

Many such horrid and callous cases are reported across our country where parents use corporal punishment and ruin the life of their children. Corporal punishment or any other humiliating or degrading treatment to children by parents in all its forms must be forcefully stopped by implementation of the Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill, 2014.
