Learning to be humble

Sindh’s new MPA, Dr Imran Ali Shah's video of beating a citizen went viral

KARACHI: A week ago, while surfing over social media, I encountered a clip of a news programme in which the host was taking the interview of Dr Imran Ali Shah, Sindh’s new MPA, whose video of beating a citizen went viral.

In the interview, Shah kept defending his action while even apologising for that. Shah’s ending statement of the interview was “I did nothing wrong.”

It was obvious that he was admitting his mistake only due to media pressure. Unfortunately, that very statement reflects the image of our entire societal behaviour. We, as a whole, have left our moral values and characters far behind.

If you take a look at the cases which caught media’s attention in the recent past of Pakistan, you will certainly notice that this was the case with each and every one. In Shahzeb’s murder case, Shahrukh Jatoi was given the death sentence, but he could not gather the courage to confess or for once at least share his condolences with the victim’s family in these years.

Similarly, a few months ago, in the Zainab rape case, a senior journalist of a news channel accused the rapist of holding foreign currency accounts and having connections with a political party. When the Supreme Court declared his claims baseless and banned him for three months, he calmly walked out of the court without apologising for wasting the court’s time when he had no evidence in support of his claim.

We need to understand the importance of humble attitude and kind words as little as sorry and thank you, in our daily lives. This is one of those differences in our and other countries’ culture, which do not seem big enough to discuss about but they do matter. It’s high time we started thinking about this on a serious note if we want our upcoming generations to be cultured.
