KARACHI:

Larkana Commissioner Naveed Ahmed Shaikh has initiated a drive to plant one million samplings in order to mitigate the effects of deforestation in the division. Launching the campaign from Larkana on Monday, he appealed residents to stop cutting trees and plant more saplings. "We are ready to provide different species of trees. A tree is a natural air conditioner. In Larkana where the temperature reaches 52 degrees Celsius in the summer, the trees not only acts as a natural air conditioner, but also reduce smoke and increase the community's respiratory health," Shaikh said, adding that he had asked the deputy commissioners of Larkana, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Kamber Shahdadkot and Jacobabad to expedite the plantation and finish it as soon as possible.

Larkana, which became one of the hottest places on earth in April this year when temperatures crossed 48° Celsius, is now largely a treeless city. Most of the trees especially on both banks of the Rice Canal have been chopped off. "I have also directed the irrigation and revenue officials to revive the past glory of Rice Canal by planting trees on its banks," he said, adding that there was a dire need to educate people about trees and their impact on environment. "We, with the help of non-governmental organisations, have also started the campaign by organising rallies and walks in the city," he said, adding that different programmes were also being designed to educate students in schools and colleges.
