Militancy in the district dates back to 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan when the area became a center of insurgency. By 2007, over 90 per cent of the district was under militants control.

In 2008, the Pakistan Army launched an operation to clear the district of militancy. The operation continued for years with local peace committees fighting alongside the military forces to restore peace.

In June, five batches comprising 689 people completed the rehabilitation course under the ‘Sabaun’ project.
