Ban on import of luxury items urged

ISLAMABAD: South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) Pakistan Chapter urged the upcoming government to slap a complete ban on the import of luxury items to protect foreign exchange reserves. The demand comes in a bid to promote local industry and generate employment under the slogan of “be Pakistani buy Pakistani”. Addressing a meeting of traders on Monday, Saarc CCI Senior Vice President and United Business Group (UBG) Central Chairman Iftikhar Ali Malik said all stakeholders should play their role in making Pakistan an economic giant. “Pakistan is importing 80,000 luxury cars and thousands of costly motorcycles and other items including fruits and vegetables worth billions of dollars annually, which must be banned,” he added.
