A local political leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) Muzafar Ali Khan, along with his personal guard and a policeman, was killed in a grenade attack in the Shakar Dara area of Matta Tehsil in Swat on Saturday.

According to SHO Police station Matta Ghawas Khan, unidentified armed militants entered Muzafar’s guest house in the middle of the night on Friday and attacked him with hand grenades. “Unknown militants entered his guest house at midnight where [Khan] was asleep and attacked him with hand grenades,” the SHO said.

Muzafar, his personal guard Sher Zaman and an officer of the police special force Abdullah Khan were killed on the spot, while three others were injured in the attack.

Muzafar Ali Khan was the leader of Tehsil Matta in District Swat for ANP. He and his family were on the direct target list of the militants during the Taliban insurgency in the area. Three years ago, his brother Mukhtiar Ali Khan and his son Aftab Ali Khan were killed by militants, while their house and Hujra (guest house) were also torched in 2008. After the incident, security forces cordoned off the area, tightened the security and started a search operation.  Meanwhile, provincial assembly member Rahmat Ali Khan and Minister for Information Technology Ayub Asharey strongly condemned the incident.
