KARACHI:
The acting vice-chancellor (VC) of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (Fuuast) was confirmed as permanent VC on Friday.
For many years, the varsity has been embroiled in administrative crises and controversies as its VCs were charged with corruption and plagiarism.
According to a notification issued by the federal ministry of education, Dr Hussain was appointed by the president of Pakistan as the Fuuast VC for a period of five years with immediate effect.
Dr Hussain has previously served as the VC of Nazeer Hussain University and Allama Iqbal Open University.
FUUAST campuses remain shut due to non-teaching staff's protests
Since Dr Zafar Iqbal was appointed as its VC in 2015, the varsity has been in turbulence. Few months after his appointment, Dr Iqbal was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on corruption charges.
He was followed by Dr Sulaiman D Muhammad whose tenure was marred by a controversy involving his PhD theses. Dr Sulaiman was accused of committing plagiarism in his theses. An investigation committee of the University of Karachi concluded that there was enough evidence to establish that his theses was plagiarised and recommended that that his PhD degree be withdrawn.
Later, when Dr Iqbal was released, he again took over the VC office in a controversial manner. Later, an order came from the office of the president, who is also the chancellor of the varsity, asking Dr Sulaiman to continue as acting VC.
In December 2017, Dr Sulaiman was relinquished from the post and Dr Hussain was made the acting VC.
