Judicial intervention

Letter August 11, 2018
Dr Amir Liaquat Hussain has remained a member of various political parties

KARACHI: The fact that Dr Amir Liaquat Hussain has remained a member of various political parties, federal minister for religious affairs and is now once again set to enter parliament despite his repeated derogatory verbal attacks on fellow politicians and TV and social figures, explains why the Supreme Court had to intervene while issuing a letter inquiring about Amir’s past record that includes levelling of serious allegations against renowned personalities. He is in the habit of repeatedly committing error after error. He himself should think about his past errors and try to rectify himself.

More recently, Amir tweeted a photoshopped picture of Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Sherry Rehman with a disrespectful caption, yet no condemnation from his party’s leadership followed. Party stalwarts, who are otherwise seen commenting on every issue, chose to maintain silence when their own party member was blatantly being sexist. Now that the highest court has questioned the former parliamentarian over his indecent remark, the issue should also be taken up by parliament.

Also, as the party Amir belongs to has failed to take any action, the judiciary once again had to intervene and deal with the matter.
