Drones and terror sanctuaries

Letter May 28, 2011
Our military cannot or does not want to go into the areas where the terrorists have found sanctuaries.

KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of May 28 “End drone strikes, or govt bound to ‘review’ relations, Clinton told”.

The drones are a real gift because they are taking out terrorists that our government is either too scared or unwilling to eliminate itself. In any case, our military cannot or does not want to go into these areas where the terrorists have found sanctuaries, so using drones is perhaps the best way to target those who are out to kill us. I am not sure why there should be any love lost for targeting people who are using force and violence to impose their views and interpretation of religion onto the rest of the country.

Instead of crying about rights violations and lost sovereignty, our media should instead also talk about the fact that the government has lost its writ in these areas because it is afraid to venture there. Doesn’t this also mean a loss of its sovereignty? Of course, the ideal situation would be if our own military were to go after the terrorists, currently based in North Waziristan.
