Child abuse in Punjab

Punjab govt most effective for taking up initiatives to curb varying forms of forced labour and trafficking

MULTAN: The recently-released US State Department report on the country’s efforts in controlling human trafficking ranked the Punjab government at the highest for taking up initiatives to curb varying forms of forced labour and trafficking. However, in other news, Punjab province has the highest number of child abuse cases across the country, followed by Sindh.

Efforts to improve the human rights record of the province will remain pointless if the upcoming government fails to protect women and children while ensuring them the safeguards provided under the law. For the country’s largest province, it would be more effective if the government forms an independent commission for the purpose that pursues the cases in courts, albeit independent of the police force which in some cases has reportedly been an accomplice of the culprits.
