Citizens warned against Congo virus

KARACHI: The health and medical services department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) warned the people, especially those visiting the cattle market, of taking precautionary measures for the spread of the Congo virus.

In an advisory issued on Friday, the citizens were advised to exercise precautionary measures during purchase and transport of cattle. It was suggested to keep their face and hands covered while visiting the cattle market.

They were asked to wear clothes with full sleeves and safety gloves to avoid germs and insect bites. Minimalist physical contact was recommended during inspection of an animal.



Those visiting the cattle market were also advised to carry boiled water for drinking and avoid eating in the open. Furthermore, citizens were advised to properly dispose the remains of the slaughtered animals.

The directive also advised that animals be kept at properly ventilated places and their water be properly covered when not in use.

Meanwhile, butchers were advised to wear gloves while slaughtering animals and wash their hands after the sacrifice to ensure extra care against the infectious disease. In addition, the concerned departments were also advised to make periodic use of disinfectant spray in places where the cattle is kept.
