A fancy affair

PTI chairma Imran Khan, has decided against an oath-taking ceremony having foreign dignitaries

ISLAMABAD: Thankfully, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman and would-be prime minister, Imran Khan, has decided against an oath-taking ceremony having foreign dignitaries — majority of whom were to be from India — arriving in Pakistan. The event would have been fanciful but for all the wrong reasons. After all, Khan’s friendship with and cordiality of terms alone does not make one deserving to attend an event as national as a new prime minister’s oath-taking.

The initially-floated idea of Khan taking oath in the presence of the common public makes more sense than the presence of film and cricket stars at the ceremony. It would be better if Khan makes efficient use of his friendly relations with Indian personalities in improving ties between the two countries.

The thought of the presence of Indian film and cricket stars — and not those from Pakistan — at the ceremony doesn’t go down well with the public at all and so it has rightly been discarded.
