LAHORE: Even today, Pakistani women are expected to abide by certain social norms that are in direct contradiction of the notion of women empowerment and enfranchisement. Several women defy these norms and social conventions, every day, while making a place of their own in a male-dominated society. They build their careers and contribute largely to the national economy. Yet a number of women make a choice between their career aspirations and a home-bound life against their wish and will. This continues to adversely affect their potential to excel in the work field.
The Pakistani government should introduce laws to increase women’s participation in the workforce and remove barriers to women’s access to economic activity, as well as provide them with methods to help strike a balance between family and work life. Modern society may have emancipated many women by making them financially independent and intellectually sound, but are our lives any easier than they used to be with all the societal barriers that still exist?
