Swimming at dangerous beaches should be banned

Provincial govt has imposed bans on swimming after drownings at Karachi beaches kill dozens

KARACHI: Many people are heading to the beaches these days to beat the scorching summer heat and to spend a part of their day by the beautiful shore of the city. However, in the wake of the rising drowning cases at Karachi’s beaches with the death toll reaching dozens especially during the Eid holidays, the provincial government has previously imposed bans on swimming in Karachi. Even after the ban, the death toll has not declined and basic awareness signs show no improvement. Young boys and sometimes girls try to test the limit by swimming into deeper waters.

The victims’ relatives have always blamed the government for the incidents, stating that if there were lifeguards with proper equipment like motorboats at the beach such tragic incidents would be controlled to an extent. However, it is an obvious fact that Hawke’s Bay is not suitable for swimming, as many such incidents have occurred there. There should be a permanent ban on swimming at these beaches because few lifeguards cannot protect thousands of picnickers at a beach that stretches over 64km.
