Neglect of mother and child health

Letter July 21, 2018
A lack of poor natal care is a leading cause of high mortality rates among infants

LAHORE: The Pakistani government has done almost nothing in providing a stable healthcare plan for pregnant mothers, and the lack of poor natal care is a leading cause of high mortality rates among infants. The absence of an appropriately-implemented health plan also leaves a majority of women in poor health. The shortage of staff and adequate facilities result in unhygienic and unsafe environment in maternity wards of government hospitals. The provincial governments should establish maternal and child healthcare programmes and allocate sufficient funds to expand and equip health facilities to provide better and skilled maternal care.
