Safety first

Letter July 18, 2018
The incident at Karachi’s Askari Park is one of the countless incidents reflective of the negligence

LAHORE: Another incident, another loss of an innocent life, another round of inquiries, hence another plethora of formalities only to be forgotten days after the public rage would die down. The incident at Karachi’s Askari Park is one of the countless incidents reflective of the negligence by the authorities with regard to public safety.

The incident which left one dead and over 25 injured occurred when an amusement ride broke apart at a height of 40 feet above the ground. According to press reports, the police have lodged a First Information Report against the park’s management whereas a committee for the purpose of inquiry has also been formed by the Sindh government.

All would go in vain, if the aforesaid actions are nothing but a mere formality. In such cases deterrent actions are needed. A lost life can never be brought back, but such fatal losses can be stopped if those found guilty of negligence are properly punished. Moreover, the government should order inspection of amusement parks across the province, many of which are operating without proper safety measures.
