Extravagance at Pakistani weddings

Letter July 13, 2018
Festivities continue for days, even weeks in many cases, and preparations for them take months

LAHORE: Simplicity seems to be an alien concept in Pakistani society as far as extravagance is concerned at wedding ceremonies and preparations. Festivities continue for days, even weeks in many cases, and preparations for them take months. We have the inherited obsession with making weddings an extravagant and lavish affair. In our country we see conspicuous consumption and, resultantly, unnecessary spending. A lot of money  is spend on clothes and food. There are many ceremonies during weddings where large numbers of guests are invited. Comparing this with the one reception custom in the West, we waste a lot of money, time and energy on weddings. This shows that we are a consumption-oriented society. We must understand the absurdity of such expenditure and extravagance. We indulge in wasteful expenses and then lament that we lack basic necessities.
