A large number of empty liquor bottles, batons, and loudspeakers were recovered from a student hostel of the University of Peshawar as the district administration and the university security conducted a joint operation to evict illegal occupants.

Last week, the University of Peshawar (UoP) administration had decided to ‘clean up’ 300 hostel rooms which have been illegally occupied by different student’s wings for years.

Late on Monday night, university security officials, along with the district government, jointly raided four hostels and rounded up around 250 people who were illegally occupying rooms in the facility.

The detained people included the governor of an inspection team, an engineer and an inspector of the FBR, for illegally occupying rooms.

UoP Spokesperson Ali Imran told The Express Tribune that the university forks out Rs10 million as subsidy for electricity and gas bills of these hostels even as illegal occupants in these buildings use air conditioning and unauthorised equipment.
