Transgender persons in elections

Letter July 06, 2018
With regard to inclusivity of women and transgender persons the country has undeniably come a long way

SIALKOT: Compared to previous elections with regard to inclusivity of women and transgender persons the country has undeniably come a long way. As this time around there are not only likely to be more female candidates but also transgender candidates contesting the elections. However, a lot still needs to be done by the government and the election commission. In the last week, a few transgender candidates withdrew their nomination papers due to their inability to pay the election commission’s fee which has been increased this time by more than 100%. To facilitate and ensure participation of transgender persons and independent candidates, the ECP needs to take into account the lack of resources such candidates face as they lack support from major political parties.

Without taking into consideration the problems of women and transgender candidates, the elections will not be inclusive and for all, which is pivotal to a democratic process.
