Back on the list

It is not the first time that Pakistan has not been placed on the FATF grey list

KARACHI: It is not the first time that Pakistan has not been placed on the grey list. It was also put on the grey list back in 2012 and remained there till 2015, for allegedly not doing enough to counter money laundering and terrorist financing. This year, Pakistan was once again placed on the list, followed by a meeting of a Pakistani delegation led by the caretaker finance minister with a FATF team to reverse the decision, but to no avail.

The question that arises is how and why Pakistan was once again put back on the infamous list within just two years. Why the measures that led to Pakistan’s removal from the list in 2015 were not carried forward. And most importantly why in a time span of four months, steps taken failed to convince of the FATF.
